The Golden Door Spa at
El Conquistador

Over the years the Golden Door Spa has gained repute as one of the finest spa retreats in the U.S., with its lavish personal service, as well as cutting edge therapeutic techniques and such soothing treatments as massage and healing baths. The original Golden Door Spa, opened by Deborah Szekely in Escondido, California, in 1958, was inspired by the ancient Honjin sanctuaries of Japan—luxurious post houses, reserved for feudal lords and nobility, along the routes from the provinces to the ancient capital, Edo. Wyndham Resorts, which has also gathered an impressive portfolio of luxury golf properties in recent years, acquired the facility in 1998. Showing great foresight, the company asked Szekely to remain on board as spa consultant for the Golden Door brand.

Now, travelers will find her philosophies and vision in practice not only at the original Escondido location, but also at three other Wyndham properties, including El Conquistador in Puerto Rico, The Boulders in Arizona and The Peaks at Telluride in Colorado.

Perched on a scenic cliff where the waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic meet, guests of the El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa in Puerto Rico choose from several localized treatments, including Terra del Yunque, which employs a mud wrap made with indigenous medicinal herbs and plants ($105). Other tropical choices such as a guava glaze ($55), a Borinquen bamboo vitalizer ($115) or an El Yunque Rainforest facial ($125) are also offered. The best option at the resort is to book into Las Casitas Village, where the personal butler will schedule all the spa and golf one desires.
